Jamshedpur: 4500 hand-pumps dysfunctional in urban areas

Jamshedpur: With the rising mercury, various urban areas of the city have started feeling the pinch of water crisis. According to sources, out of the 17,000 hand-pumps in the district, more than 4500 hand-pumps have become dysfunctional.

Wells in Mango, Birsanagar, Bagbera, Jugsalai, Karandih, Ghagidih, Parsudih and Govindpur have dried up before the end of March. Borings are also failing to yield water, sources said.

Sources went on to inform that the underground water table has gone down. The problem is likely to worsen in the months of April and May.

As per records of the Drinking Water and Sanitation Department, the water level has gone down from 50 foot to 150 foot. The level may further go down, sources said.
In Mango, Jamshedpur and Jugsalai, there are a total of 13.5 hand-pumps.

Out of these, 165 do not work. Most of the hand-pumps, around 800, are situated in JNAC. Around 65 hand-pumps are unable to yield water.
