Union leaders of Tata Steel Group Companies attend one-day training workshop to strengthen worker welfare efforts

Jamshedpur, April 18: A one-day training program aimed at empowering union leaders of Tata Steel Group companies was organized at the JRD Tata Training Center, spearheaded by Rakeshwar Pandey, President of the TRF Labor Union. The initiative was supported by the company’s CHRO Abhijeet Singh, with the objective of promoting collaboration between union leadership and company management to address present and future challenges in the interest of both workers and the organization.

The workshop was inaugurated by TRF Managing Director Umesh Kumar Singh, along with Chief Group HR & IR Zubin Palia, former Group HRM Chief P.N. Prasad, Dr. S.M. Fahimuddin Pasha, Director, Workers’ Rights, International Trade Union Confederation (Asia Pacific), and S.N. Ojha, former Regional Director, National Board for Workers’ Education and Development (Ministry of Labour and Employment).

In his opening remarks, Rakeshwar Pandey emphasized the need for union leaders to be informed, educated, and proactive. He underlined the importance of joint efforts by the company and unions to navigate upcoming competition and challenges while safeguarding workers’ interests.

TRF MD Umesh Kumar Singh highlighted the significance of union leaders understanding the real-time dynamics of the company and the market. He called for collective action to overcome present and future hurdles. Group HR Head Zubin Palia stressed the role of strong and empowered unions in the growth of any company and emphasized the need for regular training programs. He also elaborated on the challenges faced by the steel sector and the measures being taken by Tata Steel to address them.

The session featured insightful presentations by subject experts. P.N. Prasad spoke on ‘Managing Your Stakeholders as Reliable Partners,’ offering practical perspectives drawn from his own experiences. Dr. S.M. Fahimuddin Pasha addressed the accountability and responsibilities of union leaders and shared details about the activities of the International Trade Union Confederation. S.N. Ojha concluded the experts’ session with a discussion on organizational change and union leadership, illustrating his points with real-life examples.

Union leaders from various Tata Steel Group entities participated, including representatives from Tata Workers Union, TSUIS Shramik Union, The Golmuri Tinplate Workers Union, Tata Steel Foundation Employees Union, Tata Wire Employees Union, Tata Bluescope Employees Union, TSDPL Workers Union, and Tata Mazdoor Union. Officers and members of the TRF Labor Union were also present.

The workshop was anchored by CHRO Abhijeet Singh and TRF Union General Secretary Anjani Kumar.
