Left at a Loss: Left Parties Face Exit from Power After Five Decades

New Delhi (IANS): India’s Left parties are currently facing a potential exit from power across all Indian states for the first time in more than 50 years. Current electoral trends in Kerala suggest the Left Democratic Front (LDF), led by Pinarayi Vijayan, may lose its final bastion to the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF).

Historical Significance and Past Strongholds

  • National Influence: In 1996, the Left nearly saw its veteran leader Jyoti Basu become Prime Minister, a move the party’s Politburo famously blocked in what Basu called a “historic blunder”.
  • West Bengal: The Left Front established the longest uninterrupted tenure by any party in an Indian state, governing West Bengal from 1977 until 2011.
  • Tripura: The Left maintained dominance in Tripura for 25 years starting in 1993, led by figures like Manik Sarkar, before losing to the BJP in 2018.
  • Global Record: In 1957, Kerala became the first place in the world to democratically elect a Communist government.

The Current Decline

The steady erosion of the Left’s influence accelerated over the last decade:

  • 2011: Public discontent over land acquisition in Nandigram and Singur ended the Left’s long rule in West Bengal.
  • 2018: The BJP’s “saffron wave” dismantled the Left’s fortress in Tripura, reducing their presence to just 16 seats in the 60-member Assembly.
  • 2026 Trends: Early counting in Kerala shows the UDF significantly ahead in the majority of constituencies. Congress workers in Thiruvananthapuram have already begun celebrations as the Left faces being out of office nationwide for the first time since approximately 1970.
