Guwahati: Hitendra Nath Goswami of the BJP achieved a decisive win in the Jorhat Assembly constituency, defeating Indian National Congress candidate Gaurav Gogoi by 23,182 votes. Official data from the Election Commission of India confirmed the result on Monday, reflecting the BJP’s consolidated strength in the region.

Election Results Breakdown

  • Winner: Hitendra Nath Goswami (BJP) polled 69,439 votes.
  • Runner-up: Gaurav Gogoi (INC) garnered 46,257 votes.
  • Other Candidates: Pranab Priyankush Dutta (AAP) managed 701 votes, while Hemanta Kumar Pegu (SUCI-C) received 581 votes.
  • NOTA: 1,319 voters chose “None of the Above”.

Regional Context and Voter Turnout

The assembly elections, held on April 9, saw an impressive voter turnout of 85.96% from an electorate exceeding 2.50 crore. Observers credit the BJP’s success to organizational strength and a campaign focused on development.

The contest featured 722 candidates, including 59 women. While the Congress fielded the highest number of candidates at 99, followed by the BJP with 90, the final results in Jorhat followed a broader state trend favouring the BJP.
