New Delhi (IANS): India’s digital footprint continues its explosive growth trajectory. According to the latest performance indicator report released by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), total internet subscribers in the country reached 1,092.79 million (1.09 billion) at the end of March 2026.
This marks a significant 6.24% jump from the 1,028.61 million subscribers recorded in December 2025, underscoring rapidly expanding connectivity across both urban and rural regions.
Wireline vs. Wireless: Breaking Down the Data
The overwhelming majority of Indian internet users rely on wireless data networks, though fixed wireline connections are seeing steady, continuous growth.
| Metric | March 2026 Subscribers | Growth Type / Details |
| Wireless Subscribers | 1,046.26 Million | Mobile data users driving primary internet consumption |
| Wired Subscribers | 46.54 Million | Fixed line/fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) connections |
| Broadband Base | 1,065.88 Million | Grew 5.81% quarter-on-quarter |
| Narrowband Base | 26.91 Million | Surged 26.62% quarter-on-quarter |
The surge in overall phone connectivity pushed India’s cumulative telephone subscriber base to 1,330.58 million, driving the nation’s overall tele-density up to 93.26% from 91.74% in the previous quarter.
Telco Financials: ARPU and Usage Keep Climbing
Telecom operators are successfully converting increased data usage into higher financial returns. The Monthly Average Revenue per User (ARPU) for wireless services edged up 0.76% sequentially to ₹196.04. On a year-on-year spectrum, this represents a healthy 7.15% increase in subscriber monetization.
Talktime & Calling Patterns
Indians are spending marginally more time on calls. The average monthly minutes of usage (MOU) per subscriber ticked up 0.43% to 1,017 minutes. However, the behavior split between billing types remains massive:
- Prepaid Users: Average 1,074 minutes of calling per month.
- Postpaid Users: Average 477 minutes of calling per month.
Driven by these surging metrics, the central government’s intake from the telecom sector rose sharply. Quarterly License Fees grew 3.02% sequentially to ₹6,936 crore, registering a robust 9.41% annual growth rate.
Broadcast Media Update: Pay TV Landscape
TRAI also shared data regarding India’s broadcasting network. The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (MIB) has now authorized a total of 917 private satellite TV channels to operate in the country.
Of the 908 permitted channels currently available for downlinking across households in India, 342 operate as pay-TV channels, while the remaining market consists of free-to-air content.
