Cheaper Flight Tickets? Indian Airlines May Roll Back Fuel Surcharges as Crude Prices Decline

New Delhi (IANS): Air travel could soon become cheaper for millions of passengers. Indian carriers are actively exploring a complete or phased rollback of the fuel surcharge on flight tickets, following a sharp decline in global crude oil prices.

According to an NDTV Profit report, domestic airlines are currently assessing the market, with a definitive decision on the surcharge expected by the end of the second quarter or early in the third quarter of this financial year.

Why Fares Are Set to Drop: The Wait-and-Watch Strategy

The potential price cut comes as global crude oil and Aviation Turbine Fuel (ATF) cool down from their recent peaks. However, because energy markets are notoriously volatile, airline executives are adopting a cautious, calculated approach before altering fare structures.

Industry Strategy: Carriers are debating whether to completely eliminate the fuel surcharge in one go or opt for a phased, step-by-step reduction to safely balance passenger affordability with company profitability.

Domestic Routes to See Relief First

When the price cuts roll out, travellers flying within India will reap the benefits ahead of international flyers.

  • Domestic Flights: Expected to see the surcharge removed first due to immediate domestic demand and simpler operating economics.
  • International Flights: The surcharge will likely stay in place longer for overseas routes, where high fuel expenses, longer routes, and complex international operating variables remain a challenge.

Background: Why the Surcharge Was Added

Major Indian airlines—including IndiGo, Air India, and Akasa Air—had introduced the additional fuel levy in March. The surcharge was rolled out as a tactical move to offset skyrocketing ATF operational costs without permanently inflating base ticket fares.

With fuel costs finally softening, the industry is now holding cross-airline discussions to initiate a calibrated withdrawal. The goal is to make the domestic aviation market highly competitive again ahead of peak travel seasons, while protecting airline margins.
