IIW Jamshedpur, CSIR-NML organize skill competition for welders

Jamshedpur, Sept 11:  The Indian Institute of Welding (IIW), Jamshedpur Branch, in collaboration with CSIR–National Metallurgical Laboratory (CSIR–NML), organized the Branch Level Best Welder Competition on September 11 under the CSIR–Integrated Skill Initiative. The event formed a part of the National Skill Competition for Best of the Best Welders–2025.

The competition was inaugurated at CSIR–NML during its Platinum Jubilee year, celebrating 75 years of excellence as a “temple of research, education, and knowledge” since its inauguration by Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru.

Chief Guest VP Thakur, Tata Steel, emphasized the pivotal role of welding in ensuring the safety and reliability of infrastructure. Dr KL Sahu, Dr. Anand Prabhakaran, and UB Rao highlighted the importance of innovation, energy efficiency, and skill development in advancing the field.

Dr. Atanu Das, Principal Scientist at CSIR–NML, served as Convener and chief organizer, with support from Y. Usha, Roshan Kumar, and the Engineering Division team.

The competition was judged by Dr. Mayuri Mandal (NIT Jamshedpur) and Asif Iqbal (TRF), who evaluated the participants. Winners will now progress to the national and international rounds.

Participants also gained hands-on exposure to cutting-edge technologies, including robotic welding and augmented-reality welding systems, aligning with India’s vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat and strengthening the skilled workforce needed for future infrastructure growth.
