Heavy vehicles turn Jamshedpur roads into death traps

Jamshedpur, Oct 13: Illegal parking of heavy vehicles has turned several roads in Jamshedpur into potential disaster zones. From NH to Marine Drive and Burmamines to Golmuri, trucks and trailers occupy both sides of the road, shrinking usable space and raising the risk of fatal accidents. Despite repeated police crackdowns, the menace continues unabated.

Trucks and trailers are seen parked haphazardly from Pardih Chowk to Baliguma, near Sunsuniya Gate, TRF, Golmuri and Sabarmati Chowk adjacent to the Tinplate Company. The reckless parking drastically narrows the carriageway, causing traffic congestion and frequent accidents. Commuters complain of daily inconvenience, yet the situation shows no signs of improvement.

According to reports, Jamshedpur has witnessed dozens of road accidents this year, many linked to roadside parking. In January alone, 30 mishaps occurred, while February and March recorded 23 and 29 respectively. The trend continued through the year, with several deaths and injuries reported each month.

Experts point out that many of these parked vehicles lack rear lights or reflectors, making them nearly invisible at night. Without proper signaling, they become deadly obstacles for motorists. “This haphazard parking is claiming lives. Traffic police should patrol the city’s main roads regularly and clear illegally parked vehicles,” said Ravi Singh Chandel, Central President of the United Youth Association.

The situation has worsened during the festive season. Earlier, heavy vehicles from Tata Steel’s Sunasunia Gate and TRF were parked at the Burmamines Durga Puja ground. However, with the area now occupied by a puja pandal and temporary shops, these vehicles have spilled onto the roadside, creating chaos in Burmamines and Golmuri.

Assuring strict action, Traffic DSP Neeraj stated, “A campaign will soon be launched across the city to act against illegally parked vehicles. Parking on busy roads will not be tolerated. Several such vehicles have already been fined.”

Until effective measures are enforced, Jamshedpur’s roads remain an open invitation to disaster.
