Harnessing malpractices in GST returns a challenge for govt: Jatin Harjai

Concluding day of ICAI seminar, ‘Resurgence’

Jamshedpur, Feb 6: The final day of the two day conference organized by the Jamshedpur chapter of Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI), ‘Resurgence – Changing Dimension of Performance’ organized at Hotel Alcor in Bistupur entailed three sessions, in which speaker Jatin Harjai from Jaipur elaborated on malpractices in GST returns, Chandrashekhar Bej spoke on complaints to the Institute while Parag Kulkarni from Pune dwelt on the importance of following accounting standards.

In his address during the first session on Saturday, Chartered Accountant from Jaipur, Jatin Harjai said that malpractices adopted by suppliers were a veritable poser and harnessing such practices was a challenge for the government. Parag said, “The illegal process of filing GST returns may be categorized in two forms. In the first instance, the supplier without the delivery of goods make fake invoices or, in the second instance where invoices are not required by the dealers but invoices are made out in the names of registered dealers to whom material have not at all been supplied. Such type of traders and businessmen with malafide intents constitute a mere one percent for which 99 percent of the honest traders are made to suffer.”

During the second session, Chartered Accountant from Mumbai, Chandrashekhar Bej highlighted the ethical code to be followed by all chartered accountants. He said that a chartered accountant’s profession was noble and laden with responsibility. “Anyone may file a complaint against any CA with the ICAI. The complainant may not be involved in the complaint but all the same, the complaint will be pursued. Remember our profession (CA) is dignified and trustworthy and communities the world over relies heavily on us,” Bej remarked in his address.

The concluding session was marked by a detailed talk on accounting standards as stipulated by ICAI. Speaker for Pune, Chartered Accountant Parag Kulkarni stated that all CAs should follow the guidelines as adopted by ICAI. He said, “All CAs should follow the guidelines set by our Institute. By following these norms, there would be no scope of error while preparing financial statements.”

The three sessions were chaired by CAs Siddharth Khandelwal, Vinod Khemka and Alok Kumar respectively. The attendance was similar to the first day of the two day event in which approximately 150 CAs participated physically while 200 and more participated online across the country. Prizes for various contests organized were awarded to winners by ICAI Jamshedpur chairman Sanjay Goyal and secretary Sugam Saraiwala. The organizing team included CAs CK Tripathy, Pawan Agrawal, Dayashankar, Sneha Saraiwala, Sashi Saraiwala, Mahesh Agrawal, Ravi Agrawal, Yogesh Sharma, Vikas Agrawal, Ramakant Gupta and Vinod Saraiwala.
