Bharti Rani becomes first woman to be appointed assistant secretary

Jamshedpur, Nov 27: Gurmeet Singh Tote has been re-elected as the President of the Tata Motors Workers Union (TMWU) for the third consecutive term, along with RK Singh as General Secretary. Both leaders were unanimously chosen during the first meeting of the newly elected committee held at the Old Canteen Communication Hall on Tuesday night.

Gurmeet Singh Tote, representing the Foundry Division, and RK Singh, representing the Axle Division, were elected unopposed as committee members before being reappointed to their respective union leadership positions. The nominations for their posts were proposed and supported unanimously during the committee meeting. The results were officially announced late at night by election officer Chidanand Khandai.

The elections for the 85 committee members and 25 office bearers of the Tata Motors Workers Union concluded peacefully under CCTV surveillance. Voting took place from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., with the counting beginning at 6 p.m. in the Old Canteen Communication Hall. Of the 137 candidates who purchased nomination papers, 121 were found eligible to contest, while 52 members, including several office bearers, were elected unopposed.

The union, which represents 5,516 employees, completed its election process on November 26, ahead of the conclusion of its current term on December 31, 2024. The new leadership will serve from November 27, 2024, to 2027.

In a historic first, Bharti Rani was appointed as assistant secretary, becoming the first woman to hold this position in the union. Representing the Training and Transport constituency, her election marks a significant milestone.

Other key appointments included SN Singh as Vice President, Manoj Kumar Singh as Treasurer, and Deepak Kumar as Assistant Secretary. Several first-time members, including Naveen Solanki, Aman Kumar, and Mithun Mahato, secured committee seats.

Notable outgoing members, including Assistant Secretary Lal Babu Prasad, lost their seats in the election. Lal Babu Prasad was defeated by a margin of just eight votes. Other prominent losses included Manoj Kumar Tiwari, Pushpendra Kumar Mishra and Rakesh Kumar.

The election concluded with the seamless selection of all office bearers, solidifying a new leadership structure to address the needs of Tata Motors Workers Union in the upcoming term.
