Giridih (IANS): Tensions flared in Jharkhand’s Giridih district on Friday after a young woman died under highly suspicious circumstances just one month into her marriage. Infuriated by her sudden death, the woman’s family and local villagers staged a massive highway protest, accusing her in-laws of murdering her for dowry.
The protestors placed the victim’s body across the busy Jamua-Khorimahua main road, completely paralyzing traffic and causing long queues of vehicles to form on both sides.
A Fatal Demand for a Motorcycle
The victim, Rajia Khatoon—a resident of Bhucharobad (Azad Nagar) in Giridih—had married Abjal Ansari of Kurumdih village just four weeks ago.
According to Rajia’s grieving family, her in-laws began demanding a motorcycle as dowry immediately after the wedding. When the family failed to fulfill the demand, the in-laws allegedly subjected Rajia to relentless mental and physical harassment. The situation escalated drastically on Thursday evening when Rajia died suddenly inside her husband’s home.
“They continuously harassed her over the motorcycle,” a family member alleged, asserting that the systemic abuse directly led to her untimely death.
Highway Outrage Meets Police Intervention
Herodih police took custody of Rajia’s body on Thursday night and moved it to the Giridih Sadar Hospital for an autopsy.
On Friday, immediately after doctors completed the post-mortem examination, the family brought the body back to the locality, staged the road blockade, and demanded the immediate arrest of Abjal Ansari and his relatives.
The standoff ended only after Herodih Police Station In-charge Mahesh Chandra rushed to the spot with a heavy police reinforcement team. Following lengthy negotiations and assurances of a transparent investigation, the protestors agreed to lift the blockade and allowed the family to perform Rajia’s last rites.
