A dramatic twist has emerged in the alleged sexual assault of a woman inside the Gamharia police station. Her family arrived on Wednesday, claiming she is actually a minor who went missing six months ago.
The family traveled from Barbil in Odisha alongside members of a human rights organization. They discovered her whereabouts after seeing recent news reports about the incident.
Radha Raj, a human rights activist, confirmed that media coverage alerted them to the girl’s location. She stated that the team accompanied the family to ensure authorities took immediate action.
Following their arrival, law enforcement officers summoned the woman’s husband, Shankar Das, to the police station for questioning.
This unexpected claim has raised critical questions regarding the victim’s true age. Initial official reports had identified her as a twenty-year-old adult.
Authorities are now actively investigating the missing person report from Odisha to verify the family’s timeline.
Meanwhile, police officials have already arrested the primary accused officer, Sub-Inspector Neeraj Lakra. Lakra was serving as the station clerk when the incident allegedly occurred.
In addition to the arrest, senior authorities have suspended fifteen other police personnel attached to the station.
The Superintendent of Police ordered the formation of a Special Investigation Team to handle the probe. The Sub-Divisional Police Officer is leading the team to ensure a thorough investigation.
Simultaneously, the District Legal Services Authority has stepped in to support the victim. They appointed a panel advocate and a para-legal volunteer to provide free legal assistance.
Officials are also organizing rehabilitation programs and financial compensation for the victim.
The case has drawn national attention from statutory rights bodies. The National Commission for Women requested an immediate update from Jharkhand’s Director General of Police.
The commission demanded an impartial, time-bound investigation into the station premises assault. They instructed the state police chief to submit a detailed action-taken report within seven days.
Investigators are continuing their interrogation of key witnesses and suspects involved in the case. Further legal updates and medical verification of the victim’s age will follow shortly.
