Jamshedpur: Oil marketing companies delivered a financial jolt to Jamshedpur residents today by announcing a 90-paise per litre hike for both petrol and diesel. This is the second price spike in less than a week, and it has triggered widespread anxiety among local commuters over the cascading effect it will have on essential goods and daily living expenses.
Supply Crunch Sparks Panic Buying
The price hike hits the city at a precarious time, as East Singhbhum already grapples with a severe fuel supply crunch. Over the past few days, a massive panic-buying frenzy has gripped both urban and rural areas.
- Winding Queues: Long lines of vehicles now choke fuel stations stretching from Sakchi, Mango, and Dimna all the way to Patamda.
- Empty Pumps: Multiple outlets have hung up “No Stock” signboards after running completely dry hours ahead of their usual schedules.
Geopolitical Tensions and Black-Market Exploitation
The 90-paise spike validates the fears of local vehicle owners. Drivers had originally rushed to the pumps earlier this week after union leaders raised alarms over global fuel pressures. Market experts state that persistent geopolitical tensions in the Middle East—which previously choked the supply of industrial and domestic LPG cylinders—are finally trickling down heavily to liquid fuels.
This supply gap has given rise to an illicit black market in rural fringes like Patamda, where opportunists sell loose petrol in bottles and jars at exorbitant rates ranging between ₹120 and ₹200 per litre.
Authorities Step In to Control Crisis
To combat the illegal trade, a local administrative team led by Circle Inspector Ajay Kumar Munda launched emergency inspections at multiple petrol stations to curb hoarding and ensure fair distribution.
To manage the ongoing crisis, several pump operators have started rationing fuel. Under the new temporary limits:
- Two-wheelers: Restricted to ₹100–₹200 worth of fuel per visit.
- Four-wheelers: Restricted to a maximum of ₹500 per visit.
