Engineers Discuss Future of Digital Connectivity on World Telecommunication Day

Jamshedpur: The Institution of Engineers (India), one of the country’s premier professional engineering bodies, celebrated World Telecommunication and Information Society Day at its Jamshedpur Local Centre with discussions focused on the future of digital communication, artificial intelligence and resilient connectivity systems.

The programme was organised around this year’s global theme, “Digital Lifelines – Strengthening Resilience in a Connected World,” and witnessed participation from eminent engineers, industry professionals and distinguished guests from across the city.

The event commenced with a welcome address by  Vinit Kumar Shah, Chief of Manufacturing – Long Product at Tata Steel. He welcomed the Chief Guest,  Manoj Kumar Jha, Chief of Electrical Field Maintenance, Field Maintenance Electrical, Tata Steel Ltd., along with members and invited guests.

Addressing the gathering, Shah traced the remarkable journey of telecommunication technology from traditional landline systems to modern wireless communication and the integration of Information Technology with telecom services. He noted that these advancements led to the global observance of World Telecommunication and Information Society Day from 2006 onwards.

He also highlighted the growing role of Artificial Intelligence in transforming communication technologies and delivering innovative solutions across various sectors. Referring to the COVID-19 pandemic period, Shah said digital payment systems became accessible to every section of society, enabling even roadside vendors and small traders to adopt QR code-based payment systems and become digitally connected.

He observed that communication today is largely confined to interactions among human beings, but future technologies may make communication possible with both living and non-living entities. He further spoke about the importance of military-grade encryption systems for securing sensitive industrial information and seamless hybrid cloud integration connecting mines and remote industrial locations.

The programme concluded with a vote of thanks proposed by Dr. Seeram Madhuri, Honorary Secretary of the Jamshedpur Local Centre.
