Jamshedpur, Oct 24: With Dhanteras, Diwali, and Kali Puja celebrations coming to an end, preparations for the grand festival of faith — Chhath Puja — are now in full swing across the country.
In Jamshedpur, the Parsudih wholesale fruit market, considered one of Jharkhand’s largest, has turned into a bustling hub as traders and buyers crowd in from early morning.
Fruits from several states have already arrived, adding vibrant colors to the marketplace.
Banana Shortage May Push Prices Higher
Like the past two years, a shortage of bananas is once again being reported in Jamshedpur. Last year, a bunch of bananas (locally called kandi) was sold between Rs 400 and Rs 500 just before Chhath, and this year prices seem to be following the same trend.
A local buyer said, “The supply of bananas is low this year, so prices are likely to rise further.”
Trader Rehman confirmed that the current rate for a bunch is Rs 400–Rs 500, but it could increase in the coming days.
Kashmiri Apples and UP Pears in Demand
Kashmiri apples have become the star attraction at the market this season. Each box, weighing about 8–9 kg, is priced between Rs 550 and Rs 750. Pears from Uttar Pradesh are also seeing high demand, with a 16-kg box selling at around Rs2,400 — nearly Rs 200 higher than last year.
Other Fruits Also Witnessing Price Rise
The prices of ber (jujube), oranges, and lemons have also gone up slightly. A box of ber now costs around Rs 550 — Rs 50 to Rs 80 higher than last year.
Oranges are being sold at Rs 1,100 per box for larger ones and Rs 800 for smaller ones, with each box containing 22–23 kg. Lemon seller Sehvaj noted that large lemons are currently priced at Rs 18–Rs 22 apiece, and retail prices may touch Rs 40–Rs 50 due to low supply.
Buy Early to Avoid Last-Minute Price Surge
Going by the current market trend, fruit prices are expected to rise further.
Traders suggest that devotees should purchase fruits early instead of waiting for the last few days, when prices are likely to soar
