Chaibasa, Oct 24: A shocking case has emerged from Chaibasa in West Singhbhum district, where a 7-year-old boy has reportedly tested HIV positive, allegedly after being administered infected blood at the Sadar Hospital.

The incident has sparked outrage among the child’s family and raised serious questions about the hospital’s safety and screening protocols.

According to health department sources, the child was admitted to Chaibasa Sadar Hospital a few months ago for treatment of a severe illness.

During the course of treatment, doctors reportedly advised a blood transfusion.

However, after a few months, the child’s health deteriorated, prompting the family to conduct further medical tests at a private clinic — where he was found to be HIV positive.

The family  accused the hospital of gross negligence, claiming that the infection could have been transmitted through contaminated blood supplied by the hospital’s blood bank.

They have demanded a thorough investigation and strict action against those responsible for the alleged lapse.

Following the allegations, the district health department has initiated an internal inquiry.

Samples of the blood units used during the transfusion and related documents have been seized for verification.

The civil surgeon has assured that a detailed report will be prepared after a comprehensive review of the hospital’s procedures.

Meanwhile, the incident has sparked widespread concern across the region, with health activists and local organizations demanding improved safety standards, strict monitoring of blood banks, and immediate accountability for medical negligence.

If confirmed, this case could expose a major breach in hospital safety protocols and raise alarming concerns over blood screening systems in government healthcare facilities.
