Jamshedpur: The court of district and Additional Sessions Judge (XI) Satrunjay Kumar Singh on Tuesday sentenced four persons including a 45-year-old woman to life imprisonment after they were convicted in Kulraj Singh murder case registered with the Bistupur thana in April 2005.

Those sentenced include Surya Patel (52), wife Uma Patel, Niraj Singh (40) and Santosh Agrawal alias Dabbu Seth (45). The court has also imposed a penalty of Rs 10,000 on each of the convicts.

The court had on Friday convicted the four accused and had taken them all in judicial custody soon after pronouncing the judgment.

Kulraj Singh alias Raju (32) who was a transporter was shot dead by two bike-borne assailants in front of his house at Gurudwara Bustee in Bistupur on April 11, 2005.

Kulraj was killed while he was reading a newspaper sitting on a chair under a tree in front of his house. On hearing the gunshots, Kulraj’s sister-in-law Ranjit Kaur came out of the house and saw two youths who had covered their faces while opening fire at her brother-in-law.

The two had fled the spot on the bike, causing Kulraj to collapse on the ground. He was subsequently rushed to Tata Main Hospital where he was declared as brought dead.

Surya Patel, a former gangster, was notorious after his alleged involvement in several crimes in the city some two decades back. He was wanted in murder, loot and Arms Act cases by the city police. He was known for his close association with the notorious Garamnala gang.
