Jamshedpur, May 31: Around 70-75 delivery boys of Flipkart staged a sit-in protest outside the company’s Golmuri TK Complex office on Thursday, decrying salary cuts and demanding systemic improvements. Despite their unified demand for the reinstatement of previous wage rates, the management remained unresponsive, prompting the delivery workforce to escalate their protest by initiating a strike.
Saurav Dutta, a seasoned delivery boy with five years of experience, lamented the substantial reduction in delivery earnings, from Rs 18 to Rs 14 per delivery. Recent changes in delivery protocols, including a decrease in the per-delivery rate from Rs 14 to Rs 13 and the discontinuation of payment for return packets, have further exacerbated their grievances. Dutta highlighted the inefficiencies inherent in the new open-box delivery system, which not only consumes excessive time but also necessitates meticulous documentation via phone, causing significant operational challenges.
Vimlesh Kumar Sahu elaborated on the disparity in payment structure, revealing that while one parcel fetches Rs 14, subsequent parcels within the same delivery command a mere Rs 7 each. Moreover, the absence of provident fund (PF) and employee state insurance (ESI) benefits adds to the precariousness of their employment.
Sahu criticized the company’s initial recruitment strategy, characterized by enticing incentives, only to be followed by stringent rule changes that diminish these incentives over time. Delays in salary disbursement further compound their grievances, with repeated attempts to seek clarification from management yielding no satisfactory responses.
