Jamshedpur, June 11: The first widespread spell of pre-monsoon rainfall brought much-needed relief from the scorching heat across Jharkhand on Thursday, drenching Jamshedpur, Ranchi and several other districts while causing a noticeable drop in temperatures under cloudy skies.
According to the evening weather bulletin issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Ranchi recorded the highest rainfall in the state among major observatories, receiving 40.6 mm of rain between 8:30 am and 5:30 pm.
Jamshedpur also witnessed significant rainfall, recording 11 mm, while Chaibasa received 10 mm during the same period.
No rainfall was reported from Daltonganj and Bokaro, though cloud cover and changing weather conditions were observed in several areas.
The rainfall, accompanied by overcast skies and gusty winds in some places, helped curb the intense summer heat that had gripped the state over the past week.
Ranchi recorded a maximum temperature of 35.5°C, which was 1.4 degrees Celsius lower than the previous day, while Bokaro witnessed an even sharper decline, with the maximum temperature settling at 35.1°C, a drop of 3.4 degrees Celsius in 24 hours.
In contrast, temperatures remained relatively high in districts that received little or no rainfall. Daltonganj emerged as the hottest place among the observatories with a maximum temperature of 39.5°C, while Jamshedpur recorded 38.2°C and Chaibasa 35.8°C.
Meteorologists attributed the easing of temperatures to the combined impact of rain-bearing systems, moisture incursion and persistent cloud cover across large parts of the state. The cloudy conditions restricted solar heating during the day, resulting in a gradual fall in daytime temperatures in several districts.
The IMD has already forecast thunderstorm activity, lightning, gusty winds and heavy rainfall at isolated places over southern, north-eastern and adjoining central parts of Jharkhand during the next 24 to 48 hours.
Weather experts said the prevailing atmospheric conditions remain highly favourable for further pre-monsoon showers across the state.
In a positive development, IMD officials indicated that conditions are becoming increasingly conducive for the advance of the southwest monsoon.
The monsoon is expected to enter Jharkhand on its normal schedule within the next two to three days, bringing more widespread rainfall and marking the formal onset of the rainy season in the state.
With additional rain forecast over the coming days, residents can expect further relief from heat and humidity as Jharkhand prepares to welcome the southwest monsoon.
