Seraikela: Santali cinema, an emerging voice in Indian regional filmmaking, is set to receive long-overdue literary recognition with the upcoming release of its first-ever dedicated book. Authored by noted Santali film expert Ramesh Hansda, the book titled Santali Cinema and Dashrath Hansda: An Untold Story will be published in three languages—Hindi, Santali (Ol Chiki script) and English.
The book centres around the contribution of celebrated filmmaker Dashrath Hansda and chronicles the evolution of Santali cinema from its early stages to the digital age. It details the journey from Gangadhar Hembram’s video film Sarathi Nachar to the first celluloid film Chando Likhon. The 100-page book is based on extensive research and years of industry experience, making it a valuable resource for film enthusiasts and scholars alike.
In addition to discussing Dashrath Hansda’s significant works such as Saguna Ena Suhag Duld and Sita Nala Re Sagun Supari, the book explores the role of political leaders like Hemant Soren, Arjun Munda and Raghubar Das in supporting Santali cinema. Their engagement in spreading public awareness through films is thoughtfully examined.
