Jamshedpur, Feb 5: A major breakthrough has emerged in a chain-snatching case that had triggered fear and anger in the locality last month.
The two accused, who had posed as sadhus to deceive a woman and steal her gold chain, were caught by vigilant local residents when they resurfaced in the same area and were later handed over to the police.
The incident dates back to January 18, when the two impostors targeted a woman in the Sarvodaya Path, Ulidih area.
By engaging her in conversation and misleading her with false assurances, they managed to snatch a gold chain worth around Rs 2.5 lakh and fled.
The incident had caused widespread alarm, prompting residents to remain cautious and keep a close watch on unfamiliar faces.
On Wednesday, the same two men were spotted again roaming the very lanes where the crime had taken place. Suspicious locals stopped them and began questioning them.
As their identity became clear, the residents apprehended the duo and immediately informed the police.
The victim of the earlier incident also identified the two men, confirming that they were the same individuals who had duped her and made away with her chain.
Following the earlier crime, news of the fraud had spread rapidly across the area, leading to heightened awareness among residents.
This collective vigilance played a crucial role in the timely identification and capture of the accused.
The incident stands as a strong example of how public awareness and community alertness can significantly aid in curbing crime, reinforcing the idea that society’s role in maintaining law and order is as vital as that of the police
