Jamshedpur: The awareness campaign on eye donation launched by city-based NGO Roshni today covered Amar Jyoti School near Cheppa Pul at Mango in which around 25 teachers and 10 nuns attended the counseling session again conducted by Parvinder Singh Kapoor, assistant secretary of Roshni, Tony P Raj treasurer of Loyola College of Education, Dominica, principal of Amar Jyoti School and Sunita, Principal of St Joseph School, Bhilaipahari all graced the occasion.
Initially, a short movie on Eye Donation made by Sri Lanka Eye Association which gets highest Eye Donation in the world was screened. The movie moved everybody and some were seen in tears.
Interest was shown by many to know all the processes of donating the eyes and came forward not only to donate their eyes but agreed to extend all support in spreading the awareness especially in rural areas where majority of Jharkhand population resides.
Pledge forms were handed over to the Principal who will have it filled and sent it back to Roshni. They were mainly briefed about eye donation and corneal transplant that corneas are collected only after death and not before death, there is no mutilation of the face during the removal of the corneas, removal of corneas has to be done within six hours after death, corneas can be removed at any place, no special sterilized room is required for this, corneas are of use even if the deceased was suffering from any eye problems, corneas are of no use if the death is due to Cancer, Snake – Bite, AIDS, Cholera, Tetanus or Hepatitis and there is no bar of sex and age.
They were simply told to do one simple thing that as soon as any death occurs then close the eyes of the deceased and put wet cotton over the eyes. This will help keep the cornea moist and healthy. Switch off the fan but keep the Air-conditioner on. After that immediately get in touch with Roshni team, Tata Main Hospital and Jamshedpur Eye Hospital whose contact details are provided in the leaflet that have been distributed during the counseling session.
