Extortion bid behind Jamshedpur firing, accused arrested

Jamshedpur, June 22: Police have cracked the firing incident that took place near Abhishek Jubilee Tea Stall on Bengal Club Road in Sakchi and arrested the accused, who allegedly opened fire to intimidate local shopkeepers and extort money.
The accused, identified as 28-year-old Bipin Shukla of Tuiladungri in Golmuri, was apprehended near Hathi Ghora Temple while he was on his way towards Sitaramdera Bus Stand. During the arrest, police recovered an illegal country-made pistol and a magazine from his possession.

The firing incident occurred around 10 pm on June 19, when an unidentified individual allegedly fired a shot in the busy market area, creating panic among residents and traders. During the initial investigation, police recovered a 7.65 mm empty cartridge case from the spot.
Taking the incident seriously, a special raiding team was constituted on the instructions of the Senior Superintendent of Police. The operation was led by the Superintendent of Police (City) under the supervision of the City DSP. Through technical analysis and intelligence inputs, investigators identified the accused and arrested him on June 21.
Based on Shukla’s confession and subsequent lead, police recovered the firearm used in the crime along with a magazine from bushes along the banks of the Subarnarekha River.
During interrogation, the accused admitted to carrying out the firing with the intention of spreading fear among shopkeepers on Bengal Club Road and forcing them to pay extortion money. Police said the act was a deliberate attempt to establish criminal dominance in the area through intimidation.
The accused has been remanded to judicial custody and sent to jail. Further investigation into the case is underway.
