Jamshedpur, June 24: In a major crackdown on the illicit liquor trade ahead of Muharram, the Excise Department conducted an extensive enforcement drive across several locations in East Singhbhum on Wednesday, leading to the seizure of a substantial quantity of illegal liquor and the arrest of one individual.
Acting on the directives of the Assistant Commissioner of Excise, teams carried out raids at suspected liquor sale points in Kumharpara and Slag Road under the Sitaramdera police station area, as well as Tube Gate and Harijan Basti under the Burmamines police station limits.
During the operation, officials seized a total of 27.75 litres of illegally stored foreign liquor and 106.5 litres of illicit country-made liquor (chulai). The raids were part of a district-wide effort to curb the manufacture, sale and transportation of illegal liquor in the run-up to the festival.
A significant breakthrough came at a liquor outlet operating in the Tube Gate Harijan Basti area of Burmamines, where Sushant Mukhi was apprehended. Authorities recovered 7.5 litres of foreign liquor and 30 litres of illicit country liquor from his possession.
Excise officials said the arrested accused is being produced before the court and the process for judicial custody is underway. Cases have also been registered against other individuals involved in the illegal liquor trade under the relevant provisions of the Jharkhand Excise Act.
Officials reiterated that strict surveillance is being maintained across the district to prevent the sale and smuggling of illicit liquor during the festive season. The department emphasized that the ongoing enforcement campaign will continue with greater intensity in the coming days to ensure public safety and curb unlawful liquor operations.
