Elephants invade villages amid deforestation: Call for government compensation

Chakulia: The Ghatshila sub-division area, bordering West Bengal in the north and Odisha in the south, is grappling with a crisis as deforestation drives elephants into villages, wreaking havoc and causing significant losses for the local population. Villagers, affected by the escalating conflict between wild elephants and human settlements, are demanding government intervention and compensation for the damages incurred.

The sub-division, primarily situated in forested regions, has witnessed a surge in human-elephant conflicts, particularly in the Chakulia region. Recent incidents have resulted in a dozen fatalities due to elephant attacks, with hundreds of houses damaged, and crops spanning hundreds of acres destroyed. Farmers, in particular, bear the brunt of the escalating violence caused by elephants.

The situation has escalated to the point where elephants are now entering Chakulia city, breaking into Food Corporation of India (FCI) godowns and consuming grains. Tragically, elephants have suffered harm in these incidents, including the recent deaths of two elephants due to electrocution in Chakulia. Additionally, the death of five elephants in Upperbandha of Musabani, also attributed to electrocution, has raised concerns about the efficacy of existing protective measures.
The gravity of the situation prompted the organization of the Prabhat Samvad program in Jamua Panchayat of Chakulia block, where affected villagers expressed their concerns and demands for government intervention. The villagers are urging authorities to address the root cause of the issue, implement effective measures to mitigate human-elephant conflicts, and provide compensation for the losses incurred by the local population.
