Jamshedpur: The Singhbhum Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SCCI) has raised serious concerns over the escalating havoc caused by elephants in the Chakulia area of Ghatsila subdivision. For the past one to two years, elephants have been terrorizing the region, damaging industrial establishments, FCI godowns, houses, school buildings and destroying crops. They have also claimed lives, creating an atmosphere of fear and chaos among the residents and workers.
In a formal letter addressed to the Deputy Commissioner, Ananya Mittal, IAS, the Chamber urged immediate intervention and a lasting solution to the crisis. Copies of the letter were also sent to Chief Minister Hemant Soren and Chief Secretary Alka Tiwari. Honorary General Secretary Manav Kedia stated, “The havoc caused by elephants is disrupting lives and livelihoods in Chakulia. Immediate action is essential to restore normalcy.”
President Vijay Anand Moonka highlighted the detrimental impact on industries, noting, “Elephants are breaking boundary walls, damaging machinery and scaring workers. Production has declined as workers are forced to leave early and industries are struggling to survive.” The power supply in affected areas is also interrupted for hours, further crippling industrial operations.
To mitigate the crisis, the Chamber suggested creating dedicated food and water sources for elephants outside Chakulia to prevent their entry. Vice President Anil Modi added, “The current situation threatens to shut down industries, increase unemployment and halt local development. It’s imperative to act swiftly.”
Secretary Bharat Makani expressed concern for farmers, stating, “The elephants are destroying crops and lives. This recurring menace needs a sustainable solution.”
Other Chamber officials, including Vice President Rajiv Agarwal and Secretary Anshul Ringsia, have urged authorities to act in the public and business interest to resolve the crisis promptly.
