Elderly man killed by speeding auto rickshaw in Jamshedpur

Jamshedpur: An elderly man, Chandan Singh (52), was tragically killed after being hit by a speeding auto rickshaw on Kalimati Road near Howrah Bridge in the Golmuri area late Monday night. Singh, a resident of Sakchi Gurudwara Bustee and a private security guard, was crossing the one-way road while returning home from duty.

The autorickshaw, traveling at high speed from Sakchi towards Golmuri, struck Singh, causing him to fall and sustain a fatal head injury. The impact left him in a pool of blood. Local residents immediately came to his aid, while another group chased down the autorickshaw, intercepting it near the RD Tata roundabout. A patrolling police party arrived at the scene and apprehended the driver.

Singh was rushed to MGM Medical College Hospital, where doctors declared him dead on arrival. Golmuri thana OC confirmed the incident and stated, “We have arrested the driver and seized the vehicle. The accused will be sent to judicial custody tomorrow after a check to determine if he was driving under the influence of alcohol.”

This incident highlights the ongoing issue of reckless auto rickshaw driving in the city. Despite regular helmet-checking by traffic police, the regulation of unruly autorickshaws remains a significant challenge, posing a constant danger to both commuters and passengers.
