Effective use of steel by-products is key to sustainability: CSIR–NML Jamshedpur Director

CSIR–NML hosts ARMBIS-2025 training for steel industry professionals

Jamshedpur, Dec 15: CSIR–National Metallurgical Laboratory (CSIR–NML), Jamshedpur, has inaugurated a five-day corporate training programme titled “Analysis of Raw Materials and Metallurgical By-products of the Steel Industry (ARMBIS-2025)” to enhance analytical and characterization skills of steel industry professionals. The programme is being held from December 15 to 19, 2025, at the CSIR–NML campus.

The programme was inaugurated by Dr Sandip Ghosh Chowdhury, Director, CSIR–NML, who emphasised the effective utilisation of steel plant by-products as a crucial step towards sustainability. He highlighted the importance of zero-emission practices and circular economy principles in the steel sector and underlined the role of advanced chemical analysis and materials characterisation in achieving these goals.

Participants were formally welcomed by Dr Alok Kumar Meher, Scientist and Coordinator of ARMBIS-2025. The programme objectives and structure were outlined by Dr Sanchita Chakravarty, Head of the Analytical & Applied Chemistry (AAC) Division. She explained that the training includes focused modules on chemical analysis, advanced instrumental techniques and practical case studies related to raw materials and metallurgical by-products.

Addressing the gathering, Dr S Sivaprasad, Head of the Materials Engineering Division, stressed the importance of industry-oriented training programmes in promoting collaboration, knowledge exchange and problem-solving between research institutions and steel plants.

The programme has drawn participation from professionals of Arcelor Mittal–Nippon Steel India. It features hands-on training and expert lectures on advanced techniques such as ICP-OES, SEM-EDS, EPMA and X-ray diffraction (XRD). Interactive sessions with CSIR–NML scientists working in ironmaking, alloy development, failure analysis and mineral beneficiation are also part of the programme. Laboratory visits and pre- and post-training evaluations have been included to enhance learning outcomes.

The programme concluded with a vote of thanks proposed by Dr Alok Kumar Meher, reaffirming CSIR–NML’s commitment to industry engagement and sustainable steel production.
