Tata Lease Renewal: Kolhan Commissioner Orders Digital Mapping, Physical Verification of Disputed Land in Jamshedpur

Chaibasa: Kolhan Commissioner Ravi Ranjan Bikram has ordered a fresh survey of all disputed lands in connection with Tata Lease Renewal. The special committee overseeing the renewal decided that a team will conduct physical verifications and digital mapping for all disputed land records.

The Kolhan administration is pulling out all the stops to make the complex Tata Lease renewal process completely transparent and dispute-free. Authorities took a major directive to this effect during a high-level review meeting held at the Kolhan Commissioner’s office in Chaibasa.

Files to Move Only After Dispute Resolution

Tata Steel VP (Corporate Services) DB Sundara Ramam, Jamshedpur Deputy Commissioner (DC) Rajiv Ranjan, and Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC) Anurag Tiwari attended the crucial meeting.

The discussions centred primarily on the leasehold plots currently mired in long-standing legal or administrative disputes. The government-appointed three-member special committee made it clear that resolving all pending disputes is mandatory before drafting the final lease renewal agreement.

Fresh Measurements of Khata and Plot Numbers

The Kolhan Commissioner directed the district administration to remeasure the disputed land tracts by their specific khata and plot numbers. Surveyors will use modern satellite technology to generate digital maps of these areas to prevent any future legal hurdles or ownership confusion. Notably, the previous Tata Lease term expired on December 31, 2025.

Vacant Post Had Stalled the Renewal Process

Former Jamshedpur DC Karn Satyarthi had previously submitted a detailed report regarding several pending renewal matters to the state government. However, the process hit a standstill as the Commissioner’s post lay vacant at the time.

Following the arrival of the new Commissioner, Ravi Ranjan Bikram, the State Revenue, Registration, and Land Reforms Department ordered the administrative machinery to expedite the process on a war footing. The administration aims to secure a clear, digital record of every inch of this prime urban land before signing the final lease renewal pact.

Crackdown on Encroachments and Land Mafia

Tata Lease land holds immense significance for the industrial and urban development of Jamshedpur. However, allegations of illegal occupation, encroachment, and discrepancies in land records have surfaced over the past few years. Officials believe that the new digital mapping initiative will check the activities of the land mafia and bring the ground reality to light.

Physical Verification to Begin Shortly

A special team of revenue officials, led by the DC and ADC, will soon begin the physical verification of the targeted plots. The committee will submit its final report to the state government only after completing this exhaustive exercise, paving the way for the final stamp of approval on the lease renewal. This decision will prove crucial for Tata Steel’s upcoming operations and the planned development of Jamshedpur.
