Ranchi (IANS): Jharkhand achieved a milestone in its energy sector during the intervening night of Wednesday and Thursday as the second 800 MW unit of Patratu Vidyut Utpadan Nigam Limited (PVUNL) officially commenced commercial operations.
With this launch, the state has eliminated its power deficit, achieved self-reliance in electricity generation, and firmly entered the club of power-surplus states in India.
Patratu Project Boosts State Grid
The newly commissioned unit will allocate 85% of its total output—approximately 680 MW—directly to Jharkhand.
This follows the successful launch of the first 800 MW unit in November 2025, which already supplies 680 MW to the state. With both units now fully operational, the Patratu project alone injects a massive 1,360 MW of power into Jharkhand’s grid.
According to data from the state Energy Department, Jharkhand’s average electricity demand currently hovers around 3,000 MW. Meanwhile, the state’s total power availability—combining the two Patratu units with other energy sources—has surged to approximately 3,885 MW. This leaves Jharkhand with a comfortable surplus of nearly 600 MW above its daily requirement, excluding distribution losses.
Energy experts note that the state can now sell this surplus electricity during non-peak hours, opening up a lucrative new revenue stream for the government.
A Powerful Joint Venture
PVUNL operates as a joint venture between energy giant NTPC and the Jharkhand Bijli Vitran Nigam Limited (JBVNL), with NTPC holding a dominant 74% stake and JBVNL holding the remaining 26%.
While the project’s ultimate long-term objective aims for a total generation capacity of 4,000 MW, the ongoing first phase focuses on establishing three 800 MW units to total 2,400 MW. With two units now active, engineers expect the third unit to begin production in the coming months.
Eco-Friendly, High-Tech Operations
The facility utilizes advanced supercritical technology designed to maximize efficiency. To drastically minimize environmental impact, developers integrated cutting-edge features including:
- Air-Cooled Condensers to save water resources.
- A 100% Dry Ash Handling System to manage waste cleanly.
The plant sources its coal directly from the Banahardi coal block in Latehar, while the nearby Patratu Dam supplies the necessary water for operations.
Industry analysts emphasize that the project will stabilize the power supply across all districts, eliminate the state’s dependence on expensive external electricity purchases, and provide uninterrupted power to heavy industries. This newly established grid stability is expected to attract industrial investment and generate widespread employment opportunities across Jharkhand.
