Dumper kills youth on Tata-Kandra Road, 30 killed so far this year

Jamshedpur: A 21-year-old youth was killed on the spot and his uncle seriously injured as the motorcycle they were riding was hit by a speeding dumper on Tata-Kandra Road at Gamharia in the adjoining Seraikela-Kharsawan police station area this morning.

The victim, who died on the spot, was identified as Binod Kumar Mahato and the one injured as Nimai Chandra Mahato, both residents of Chandil. The injured was admitted to the MGM Medical College and Hospital where his condition was serious.

The mishap occurred when the deceased was going to Chaibasa along with his uncle for submitting application form for getting admission into a Chaibasa-based B.Ed College.

According to a relative, the nephew and uncle were going Chaibasa by riding the bike through the Tata-Kandra Road at about 8.30 am and as they were negotiating a lonely stretch of the four-lane, a speeding dumper came from behind and hit them.

“Binod was driving the bike while his uncle rode pillion. As the truck hit the bike, Binod fell apart along with his uncle. As he fell, the rear wheel of the dumper ran over his head,” said the relative.

The dumper driver had, however, managed to flee the scene of mishap leaving the two in a pool of blood. The victims were rescued by a patrolling party which was coming from the Seraikela end. The police rescued the victims and rushed them to the medical college and hospital, where the doctors on emergency duty declared Binod as brought dead.

In the impact of the mishap, Binod’s suffered critical head injury. The injured, Nimai also sustained head injury beside injury in the right leg and right hand. Neither of the victims wore helmet.

Additional superintendent of police, Seraikela, Naresh Prasad confirmed about the road mishap at Gamharia and said the police were yet to trace the dumper that caused the mishap.

“We are, however, trying to find out the dumper driver responsible for the mishap for the necessary action,” said the senior police officer.

Prasad, when queried, admitted that the number of road mishaps on Tata-Kandra Road has gone up.

“We have noticed that most of the mishaps taken place on Tata-Kandra Road are caused by dumpers. The dumper drivers tend to drive at a break-neck speed so as to do maximum number of trips, and thus overlook the traffic rules, resulting in the fatal road mishap,” said Prasad, adding that they would enforce a speed-limit system for the heavy vehicles shortly.

Notably, the Tata-Kandra Road has turned into a mishap-prone road in which over 30 deaths have taken place since January this year.
