Jamshedpur/Ranchi : Dreaded criminal Fahim Khan, has been shifted to Ghaghidih Central Jail from Hotwar Central Jail in Ranchi last evening.
Though Khan (62) has been put in a cell at the Ghaghidih Central Jail, the jail authority have tightened security in view of warding off any unpleasant situation with the other high profile criminals already lodged in the jail and also to stop such prisoners from operating criminal activities from inside the jail.
The Ghaghidih Central Jail’s jailer Satyendra Chowdhury said that Khan was originally lodged in Dhanbad Central Jail in May 2011 and had been shifted to Hazaribag Central Jail, Dumka Central Jail and to Hotwar Central jail in Ranchi in February 2014. Finally, he was shifted to the Jamshedpur jail yesterday.
Apart from this, jail administration have been asked to initiate blanket frisking of visitors and also jail inmates. The senior prison authority has also instructed jail administration to ensure that the personnel deployed at the watch towers of the jails keep extra vigil on movement of inmates.
Security of the Ghaghidih Central Jail, located on the outskirts of the steel city was also beefed up. Altogether, 18 naxals are lodged in the central jail for their involvement in different naxal-related cases.
Three hardcore naxals had escaped from the Chaibasa divisional jail by duping the jail officials in January. Close on the heels, six undertrial including two Naxalites fled the Seraikela divisional jail by taking hostage the assistant jail superintendent at gunpoint , last month. The two incidents of jailbreak by Naxalites prompted the state prison authorities to review the jail security across the state.
Concerned over probable naxal attack on the Ghaghidih Central Jail, the central jail authority has written a letter to the district administration demanding closure of the Karandih-Ghaghidih Road that passes along the jail during night.
The jail administration has also requested the deputy commissioner, Amitabh Kaushal for keeping the Karandih-Ghaghidih Road closed from 8 pm till 5 am so that prison may remain safe during the night.
Presently a large number of undertrial prisoners charged with naxal-related cases lodged in the central jail, and their comrades may try to set them free by storming the jail. At present the Ghaghidih Central Jail has over 1,300 inmates.
Of these 13 undertrials are facing naxal related cases. Similar raids were also conducted at Seraikela Divisional Jail and in Ghatshila Sub-divisional Jail at Dhlabhumgarh.
Notably, the Ghaghidih Central Jail is spread over an area of 20 acres — set up on as large an area as Birsa Munda Central Jail in Hotwar, Ranchi.
