Jamshedpur, July 8: Vijay Kumar Nirala, a resident of Kadma, committed suicide by jumping in front of a goods train near Tata Pigments gate under Jugsalai police station jurisdiction on Saturday at around 11 am.

His body was dragged approximately 100 meters by the train. After traveling a short distance, the train driver stopped the train. The police were informed about the incident. Upon receiving the information, the police arrived at the scene and informed Vijay’s relatives.

Police swiftly recovered Nirala’s body and transported it to the MGM Medical College mortuary for postmortem procedures,

Vijay, who had been employed as an IL-2 officer at Tata Steel, had been embroiled in a serious allegation two months ago, which led to his suspension and an ongoing departmental inquiry. Following his suspension, he was transferred to the Kalinganagar plant.

Eyewitnesses, comprising local auto drivers, revealed that Vijay had been frequenting the area for the past month with intentions of self-harm. Each time, the compassionate auto drivers managed to intervene and prevent him from taking such drastic measures. However, regrettably, they were unable to intervene today, resulting in this tragic outcome.

The auto drivers mentioned that he would arrive in a car and park it on the road. The police have also seized his car. Currently, the police are gathering information from Vijay’s relatives about the reasons for his suicide.

According to sources, an investigation was underway regarding Vijay’s involvement in a certain case within Tata Steel.

Jugsalai thana Officer-in-Charge (OC), Kunal Kumar, stated that they promptly alerted the railway police regarding the incident to initiate necessary action. However, due to a delayed response from the railway police, the local police had to take immediate action themselves.

According to the OC, the deceased took his own life at approximately 11 am. The driver of the goods train was the first to witness the incident but was unable to prevent the tragedy as it unfolded rapidly. The officer added that Nirala had been waiting for the train and leaped in front of it as it approached.

Although no suicide note has been discovered thus far, the police officer affirmed that the case is being treated as a suicide.

This unfortunate event sheds light on the distressing consequences that can befall individuals experiencing mental anguish and the importance of providing support and resources to those in need. It also serves as a reminder of the significance of mental health awareness and intervention within the workplace.
