Jamshedpur, July 28: A 28-year-old youth was found dead at Baroda Ghat in the Kharkai river, located in the Bagbera police station area, on Saturday morning. The identity of the deceased has yet to be established. The presence of jeans and a T-shirt on the body suggests that the youth may have drowned in the river under circumstances other than taking a bath.
Upon receiving information about the body, the police arrived at the scene and recovered it. The body was initially kept near the Baroda Ghat for over an hour in an attempt to identify the deceased. Later, it was shifted to the MGM Medical College mortuary for postmortem, as the identity remains unknown.
The Officer in Charge (OC) of Bagbera, Koisalendra Jha, initially speculated that the youth might have drowned while bathing in the river. However, upon further inquiry, he mentioned the possibility of the youth drowning while crossing a cemented path that connects Adityapur to Bagbera.
Jha explained, “There is a cemented path along the Baroda Ghat that serves as a shortcut between Adityapur and Bagbera. Although it is not an official pathway, many people use it. After the recent monsoon rains, the cemented path has become slippery. It is likely that the youth slipped on the path and fell into the river, resulting in drowning.”
The OC highlighted that drowning incidents at this particular spot of the Baroda Ghat are not uncommon, emphasizing that people continue to take the risk of using the shortcut route despite the dangers it poses.
Local authorities are urging caution and advising residents to avoid using unofficial pathways near the river during the monsoon season.
