Jamshedpur, May 7 : Residents of Sonari staged a daylong dharna at Domuhani as a part of
Subernarekha-Kharkai Nadi Bachao Abhiyan ( save river campaign). About 100 residents took part in it. The Jharkhand Moolvasi Adhikar Manch, launched the initiative.
Convener of Jharkhand Moolvasi Adhikar Manch, Harmohan Mahto who was leading the agitation said the daylong dharna was organised to create pressure on the district administration for initiating measures to reduce pollution in both the rivers and also to carry out massive plantation at Domuhani.
” It is a matter of great concern. We have invited people from all cross sections of the society for joining out movement to make the two rivers pollution free. Our campaign will continue. If no steps are taken by the government we would intensify our agitation , ” said Mahato, a social activist.
“Due to the effluent discharge the colour of the water of river has turned white. The situation is grave. The water has become dirty for use. Apart from large scale flow of industrial and domestic waste in the river, encroachment of the bank area was also a matter of grave concern. We had launched a campaign to save this historic river from an untimely death and now I want to ensure fruitful results, said another functionary.
Another social activist said rivers are like economic, social and cultural spine of the country. We must keep them alive by foiling the attempts of large scale encroachment and flow of pollutants in to them.
