Dhanteras market sans festive glitter

Mail News Service

Chaibasa, Nov 13: The Dhanteras market this year was sans the festive glitter that otherwise accompanies the occasion when people ritually rush to shops to purchase new objects and vehicles in anticipation of bounteous times. This year however, the rush was missing and shopkeepers who had laden their business premises with their stocks of trade looked glum faced. The usual rush see people making a beeline for jewelry, utensils and vehicle outlets but this year nothing of that was evident in spite of Dhanteras being observed over two days, November 12 and 13. Many Chaibasa shopkeepers said that as compared to other years, sales this year was barely 10 percent.

Villagers from the fringe areas of Chaibasa were the prime customers this time. Jewelers said that the sale was more of silver items than gold. Even shops selling utensils did not do the usual brisk business. People mostly purchased brooms which are traditionally believed to usher in prosperity.
