Dhanbad, Jan 12: A controversial incident involving the removal of shirts of 80 girl students of Carmel School Digwadih, Dhanbad has sparked widespread outrage. Parents have filed a formal complaint with the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR), while the administration has initiated an investigation. In response to the incident, the BJP has demanded swift and strict action against the school management and has threatened to take to the streets if no action is taken within 24 hours.
The incident occurred on January 9, when the 10th-grade girls were celebrating Pen Day—the final day of their pre-board exams. The girls were writing autographs on each other’s shirts as part of their tradition to create lasting memories. However, the principal reportedly disapproved of the celebration and reacted angrily. According to reports, the girls were forcibly made to remove their shirts and sent home in blazers without any shirts underneath.
Many of the students were reportedly distressed and in tears but their repeated pleas were ignored by the school management. The incident was captured on CCTV cameras, and the footage later went viral on social media, amplifying the outrage.
The Jharkhand Parents Association condemned the school’s actions, calling them “unfortunate and shameful.” The association has urged the NCPCR to take immediate action against the school. A letter written by the association demanded accountability for the incident, expressing concern over the trauma caused to the young students.
“This behaviour is unacceptable,” said Jharia MLA Ragini Singh, who joined the parents in filing a complaint against the principal at the Deputy Commissioner’s office. She described the incident as “shameful and unfortunate” and called for swift punishment.
Dhanbad Deputy Commissioner (DC) Madhavi Mishra assured that the administration was taking the matter seriously. “We have received multiple complaints from parents regarding the principal’s actions. A committee has been formed, including officials from the Sub-Divisional Magistrate, District Education Officer, District Social Welfare Officer, and Sub-Divisional Police Officer, to investigate the incident,” Mishra said.
The DC also mentioned that they had already spoken to some of the affected girls. She further stated, “Action will be taken based on the findings of the investigation committee. We will also engage with the school administration and take appropriate legal measures. Such behaviour will not be tolerated, and we are committed to ensuring justice.”
This incident continues to raise questions about the treatment of students in educational institutions, and authorities have promised that appropriate steps will be taken once the investigation is complete.
