New Delhi: Iconic landmarks across India, led by New Delhi’s India Gate, will switch off their lights tonight from 8:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. IST to observe Earth Hour 2026. The global initiative marks its 20th anniversary this year, challenging citizens and institutions to “Give an Hour for Earth” to highlight the urgency of climate action.
A Global Milestone: 20 Years of Action
What began as a symbolic “lights-off” event in Sydney in 2007 has evolved into the world’s largest grassroots environmental movement. Organized by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF), Earth Hour now unites millions of people across more than 190 countries.
In India, the movement transcends symbolism. City authorities, including the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC), have issued nationwide appeals for residents to cut power to non-essential appliances and lights during the one-hour window.
Leadership in Sustainability
GHMC Commissioner R.V. Karnan emphasized that the act represents more than mere energy saving. “Every small action counts,” Karnan stated. “By dedicating just one hour to the planet, we inspire meaningful change and contribute toward a sustainable future.”
Last year, national treasures including Rashtrapati Bhavan and various monuments joined India Gate in darkness, reinforcing India’s cultural commitment to environmental stewardship.
Why It Matters
Environmental experts view Earth Hour as a critical reminder of our collective responsibility. Beyond the 60 minutes of darkness, the campaign encourages long-term shifts in behavior:
-
Reducing carbon emissions through smarter energy use.
-
Supporting policies that protect fragile ecosystems.
-
Raising awareness about the immediate impacts of climate change.
As the clock strikes 8:30 p.m. tonight, India joins the world in a silent but powerful statement for the planet’s survival.
