Amul Refutes Vande Bharat Curd “Insect” Claims

Jamshedpur: Amul has officially refuted viral claims regarding insects found in its curd served on the Patna–Tatanagar Vande Bharat Express. Labeling the allegations as “misleading and scientifically untenable,” the dairy giant confirmed that its internal investigation found no quality lapses.

The Controversy and Amul’s Investigation

The backlash began after a social media video, dated March 15, 2026, purportedly showed live weevils inside a sealed Amul curd cup. In response, Amul audited its entire supply chain and consulted with the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC).

Key findings from Amul’s report include:

  • Unauthorized Supply: Amul revealed that the specific batch shown in the video was never supplied to the train through its authorized distribution network.

  • Environmental Impossibility: The company explained that the acidic, oxygen-deficient environment of sealed curd makes it impossible for insects like weevils to survive.

  • Temperature Factors: Curd is stored at low temperatures, whereas weevils require warm, dry conditions to thrive.

Potential Source of Contamination

Based on an analysis of the footage, Amul suggests the insects likely originated from the serving tray or the immediate environment rather than the product itself. This points toward a potential hygiene lapse in onboard handling by third-party vendors rather than a manufacturing defect.

Commitment to Quality

Amul reiterated that it produces all dairy products in ISO-certified facilities under strict Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs). The company is currently cooperating with IRCTC to identify where the handling breakdown occurred and to hold the responsible parties accountable.

Amul urged the public to rely on verified facts and shared its customer support channels for any further queries:
