Jamshedpur: Hopes for air connectivity in East Singhbhum have been reignited as the Dhalbhumgarh Airport Project has overcome a significant hurdle. Authorities have officially excluded a disputed 9-acre land parcel from the project following protests by villagers from Devshol and Ruashol. Originally proposed across 249 acres, the project will now move forward on 240 acres, clearing the path for the long-stalled development.
AAI Team Conducts Site Inspection
A five-member team from the Airports Authority of India (AAI), led by DGM (ATM) Ajay Kumar Singh, conducted a comprehensive inspection of both Dhalbhumgarh and Chakulia sites on Saturday. The team evaluated several technical aspects, including:
-
Connectivity: Assessment of existing road and railway links to the sites.
-
Infrastructure: Inspection of runways and potential boundaries.
-
Land Records: Verification of land ownership and encroachment status in coordination with local revenue officials.
The AAI is currently preparing a detailed technical report based on this survey, which is scheduled to be submitted to the Central Government by April 24, 2026.
Dhalbhumgarh vs. Chakulia: Weighing the Options
While the Dhalbhumgarh project (initiated in 2019) has faced setbacks due to its proximity to an elephant corridor, forest land, and religious sites, the Chakulia Aerodrome has emerged as a strong alternative.
-
Chakulia Advantage: Spanning approximately 514 acres, the Chakulia site offers more space and fewer environmental hurdles compared to Dhalbhumgarh.
-
Strategic Vision: Both sites are being considered under the Central Government’s mission to develop 100 new airports by 2036.
Phased Development and Regional Impact
The proposed plan for Dhalbhumgarh involves a two-phase development:
-
Phase 1: Construction of a 1,745-meter runway and essential terminal facilities.
-
Phase 2: Expansion of the runway to accommodate larger commercial aircraft.
Officials believe the airport will act as a catalyst for industrial growth in the border regions of Jharkhand, West Bengal, and Odisha, significantly enhancing connectivity for the Kolhan division.
