A police Inspector died on Sunday night when a vehicle transporting illegal liquor ran over him during an interception attempt on the Indore-Betul highway in Dewas district.
Dilip Puri, the Station House Officer of Khategaon police station, led a team to block the vehicle after receiving a tip-off about liquor smuggling along the route.
The oncoming vehicle struck Puri directly during the operation, causing fatal injuries. Medical personnel declared him dead shortly after arriving at the local hospital.
Police officers arrested the driver at the scene and seized the liquor-laden vehicle. Investigators are currently determining whether the driver deliberately targeted Puri to escape arrest.
This fatal incident highlights the growing threat of illegal liquor operations across Dewas district. Recent tragic events have already put the regional trade under heavy public scrutiny.
Between September 27 and October 16, adulterated liquor allegedly killed at least 13 residents in Chandana and Binjana villages. The toxic alcohol also blinded several other victims.
The tragic deaths sparked intense political outrage across the state. Opposition leaders quickly accused the government of failing to control the rampant illegal liquor trade.
District officials initially denied any conclusive link between the deaths and poisonous alcohol. However, state authorities later ordered a formal high-level inquiry into the matter.
The government suspended several excise officers following the initial investigation. Senior district officials also faced immediate transfers as part of administrative actions.
Congress leader Arun Yadav strongly criticized the government after Puri’s death. He claimed the brutal attack clearly proves the deteriorating law and order situation in Madhya Pradesh.
