Jamshedpur, Nov. 25: Devotees on Wednesday thronged the banks of the Domuhani River in Sonari to take holy dip on the occasion of Kartik Purnima.

In Mango, large number of devotees visited the Gandhi ghat along with other ghats on the banks of the river Subarnrekha to perform certain rituals marking the festival.

Devotees also offered flowers and milk and perform pooja on the ghats. Since early morning, devotees started gathering at the river banks and offered prayers to the river and sun god.

Police personnel along with divers were deployed on the ghats and efforts were being made to ensure that citizens move in a disciplined manner to avoid stampede like situations, police said.

Kartik Purnima is celebrated on the full moon day and marks the end of holy month Kartik. It is believed that on this day, Lord Vishnu was personified in the Matsya (or fish) form and saved Manu (who was the first man to be alive after the Maha Pralay).

Kartika Purnima is also known as Tripuri Purnima and Tripurari Purnima.
