DC reviews administrative preparedness to deal with flood

Orders deputation and training of civil defence volunteers, stresses on cleanliness

Jamshedpur: East Singhbhum district administration has pulled its socks to deal with flood situations in low-lying areas of the city. The deputy commissioner Amit Kumar today asked the district authorities concerned of various departments to take necessary steps to ensure relief for the flood-affected people in case flash floods occur anywhere in the city.

Addressing a meeting convened to review the preparedness of the crisis management machinery of the district, the DC said there was need to be alert and keep a watch on the water level in Swarnarekha river and the situation in the 24 flood-prone areas of the district. He said pre-emptive measures should be initiated in such areas. He said the different departments should coordinate among themselves to be prepared to ensure supply of food-grains, drinking water, electricity and other necessary items to the affected people in case need arises.

The relief camps should have ample supply of food packets containing items like chura (beaten rice), jiggery, milk and biscuits. Medicines, drinking water, fans, generator sets and toilets should also be provided to the people in flood situations, he said.

The DC said that four trained civil defence staff should be deputed in each of the 24 wards of the district, especially flood-prone areas where they could provide relief to the people. He directed the health department authorities to intensify a campaign to create public awareness on vector-borne diseases, especially dengue, malaria, Japanese Encephalitis and chikungunya.

The DC ordered the officials concerned to organize a practical training session for the civil defence and crisis management staff at Red Cross Building tomorrow. A mock training session will also be held tomorrow at the JRD Tata Sports Complex.
