Speeding dumper kills 50-year-old man, residents block highway

Jamshedpur, July 19: Traffic movement was hit on the Tata-Hata state highway for more than three hours after residents set up a blockade near Khasmahal in Parsudih to protest a mishap death that took place on Wednesday morning.

In the mishap, a 50-year-old man, Baiju Hembram, a resident of Babagarh in Karandih was killed by being hit by a speeding dumper near Khasmahal.
After the mishap, the local residents gathered near the spot and set up a blockade there, demanding compensation to the kin of the mishap victim.

The blockade was lifted after the owner of the killer dumper, was summoned to the Parsudih police station where he paid Rs 15,000 compensation to the kin of the mishap victim. Apart from the compensation from the dumper owner, the local administration paid Rs 10,000 to the bereaved family members. The blockade was set up at about 6.15 am and was lifted by 9.30 am. Significantly, soon after the mishap the dumper driver fled the scene leaving the killer dumper.

OC, Parsudih police station, Animesh Gupta said that the police have seized the dumper that the driver left near the spot after the fatal mishap.
“I will call the motor vehicle inspector (MVI) for getting the dumper checked and would also get it verified whether the dumper was fitted with speed governor, which is mandatory for keeping the speed under limit,” said the officer-in-charge.

A long queue of trucks, trailers and other mode of vehicles had been made as the vehicular communication came to a standstill due to the blockade. Commuters had to suffer immensely.

As this was the prominent road for plying of trucks and trailers carrying goods, this caused great inconvenience to the local residents and also others. When the two-wheelers and pedestrians took to other routes, those in four-wheelers and three wheelers remained stuck up in the jam.

This was the second mishap involving a dumper to take place in and around the Jamshedpur during the past 24 hours. Earlier on Tuesday morning, four police men, including an ASI were injured when the van the cops were travelling in was hit by a speeding dumper.
