Jamshedpur: In a brazen act that has rattled the city’s business community, a cunning youth pulled off a daylight theft at a jewelry shop in the Ulidih area, escaping with ornaments worth approximately Rs 23–24 lakh.
According to reports, the incident occurred around 11 a.m. at Vishwanath Jewellers, located near Hari Mandir on Sankosai Road No. 1 under Ulidih police station limits.
The accused entered the store posing as a genuine customer and engaged the shop staff in conversation.
Abhijit Dutta, son of shop owner Vishwanath Dutta, attended to the youth and showed him a range of ornaments. Gaining their confidence, the suspect pretended to select an item and handed over Rs 1,000 as an advance, saying he would return in the evening to complete the purchase.
However, his real intent surfaced soon after.
On checking the stock, Abhijit discovered that a box containing valuable jewelry had gone missing. A review of the CCTV footage confirmed that the youth had cleverly stolen the ornament and fled the scene unnoticed.
The accused had reportedly visited the shop a day earlier and purchased jewelry worth Rs 5,700, apparently to build trust before executing the theft.
Police reached the spot soon after being informed and have launched an investigation. Efforts are underway to identify and apprehend the accused using CCTV footage and other leads.
The incident has sparked concern among local traders, who are now demanding enhanced security measures to prevent such audacious crimes in the future.
