DAV State Athletics & Roller Skating tournament begins
Jamshedpur, Aug 29: On the occasion of National Sports Day, commemorating the birth anniversary of hockey legend Major Dhyan Chand, the DAV State Level Athletics & Roller Skating Tournament commenced with great enthusiasm in Jamshedpur. The highlight of the day was DAV Bistupur’s Sumona Isha Mandal, who clinched a gold medal in the 100-meter race, bringing pride to her school.

The grand opening ceremony at JRD Sports Complex saw the participation of over 1,200 athletes, both boys and girls, under the U-14, U-17, and U-19 categories. Representing 84 schools across eight clusters of Jharkhand, students competed in 13 athletic disciplines, including sprints, relays, long jump, high jump, triple jump, discus throw, javelin throw, shot put, and roller skating.

Senior Superintendent of Police, Jamshedpur, Piyush Pandey, graced the occasion as Chief Guest. Addressing the gathering, he emphasized the importance of sports in fostering discipline, teamwork, and unity among the youth. He also urged parents to encourage their children to actively participate in sports. “Winning is important, but the true value of sports lies in the confidence, resilience, and life lessons it imparts,” Pandey remarked while congratulating the winners and motivating those who could not secure medals.

M.K. Sinha, Principal of DAV Kapil Dev Public School, Kadru, Ranchi, and State Coordinator of DAV National Sports 2025, also marked his presence, extending his best wishes to the participants.

The day witnessed several outstanding performances, with athletes from DAV Hazaribagh and Udimari dominating the roller skating events, while DAV Jamadoba, Hazaribagh, and Koderma showcased excellent performances in the track events.
Competitions held on the first day included 100 m, 200 m, 400 m, 800 m, 1500 m races, 4×100 m and 4×400 m relays, high jump, long jump, triple jump, and throwing events. Roller skating featured quad (300 m, 500 m, 1000 m, and one lap) and inline (500 m, 1000 m, and one lap) categories, played at both JRD Sports Complex and Gopal Maidan.
The tournament will conclude on August 30 with the remaining events, followed by the closing ceremony and final prize distribution.
