Jamshedpur: CBSE East Zone Chess Tournament 2017 (Patna and Allahabad Region) ran from Friday 6Ih October to Sunday 8th October and took place at DAV Public School, Bistupur, Jamshedpur.
More than 400 players from Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and Jharkhand participated in the tournament. The tournament was divided into four categories – U-ll, U-14, U-17 and U-19.
In the Team Chess U-17 girls category-DPS Patna was crowned the winner, Sun Beam English School Varanasi was second while the hosts DAV Bistupur ended as the second runners-up.
In the Team Chess U-19 girls category-DPS Dhanbad was declared the winner followed by DPS Eldeco,Lucknow and Guru Govind Singh Public School Jharkhand.
In the team Chess U-14 girls category-Sunbeam School Lahartara was the winner, DPS Varanasi was second while Sunbeam Varuna was third.
In the team Chess U-11 girls category-Sunbeam English School Varanasi was first followed by DPS Ranchi Sail Township and DPS Varanasi.
The CBSE Chess Tournament is an opportunity for students to exercise their brains and compete for both individual and team titles. The tournament was characterized in all sections by many interesting and closely contested games. Some matches were decided in a short span of time as one player outwitted the other, instantly, leaving no room for the opponent to recollect his wrong move, while the others seemed to never come to an end as the players were equally matched and tried their level best to defeat one another.
After the culmination of the tournament players were excited to assemble in the school premises for the valedictory function as they were filled with optimism and a positive note. The Closing Ceremony began with the DAV Anthem followed by the presentation of blossoming bouquet to the Chief Guest, Debashish Barua, International Arbiter, Kolkata and Sanjay Kumar Singh, Observer, CBSE.
The officials of the Chess Tournament were also felicitated on the occasion.
To mark the occasion, a short cultural programme was presented by the students of DAV Public School, Bistupur. A scintillating patriotic dance was performed by the students of Std.I and the school choir sang an enchanting inspirational song to the elation of the audience. Students of Std.IV showed their acrobatic skills in the drill display.
Principal, Pragya Singh in her address congratulated the winners and expressed her joy at the success of the tournament. She further expressed her amazement at the engrossed way in which the future grandmasters of the nation showed their expertise. The winners of the tournament were conferred with the prizes by the Chief Guest, Principal and the other dignitaries present on the occasion.
