Jamshedpur: The second day of the Capacity building programme for in-service teachers, part of the Early Education Development Programme (EEDP), commenced with the chanting of the Gayatri Mantra, setting a reflective tone for the day’s sessions.
The first session was led by Renu Kumari, a Master Trainer from DAV Mahuda, who focused on the ‘Importance of Storytelling in Child’s Development.’ With great enthusiasm, she began with a brainstorming game, engaging participants from the start. Renu Kumari emphasized that storytelling is crucial for children’s development, serving as a tool to instill values, enhance reading skills, and expand children’s imagination. She highlighted how storytelling fosters logical thinking, memory retention, and creative inspiration in young minds.
Following this, Kriti Mishra, a Master Trainer from Tata DAV Sijua, conducted a session on ‘Play as a Learning Engine and Creating Age-Appropriate Repositories for the Classroom.’ She described ‘play’ as a fundamental engine for learning, particularly in pre-primary education, where activities and games should form the basis of teaching. Kriti demonstrated various activities designed to instill values and showcased innovative presentations. She introduced Jadui Pitara, an educational tool for foundational learners, which supports the development of cognitive, affective, and psychomotor skills through playful learning.
Rinki Kumari, a Master Trainer from DAV Public School, Bistupur, led the next session on Motor Skills, Safety, and Assessment in Nursery Classes. She emphasized the importance of overall development in nursery classes, which lays the groundwork for future learning. Rinki’s session was lively, filled with activities that promote physical and mental growth in young children. She focused on key areas such as gross and fine motor skills, balance and coordination, body awareness, and health and hygiene. Rinki stressed that assessments in pre-primary classes should be age-appropriate and not burdensome, recommending a verbal assessment approach and maintaining a student portfolio with sections like “All About Me,” an observation checklist, and specimen work.
The final session, Understanding Assessment through Play and Activities, was directed by Jasbir Kaur and Kanchan Kumari, both Master Trainers from DAV Public School, Bistupur. Jasbir Kaur discussed the importance of setting clear learning objectives and planning assessment activities to meet these goals. She explained that early childhood evaluation is an ongoing process, using tools such as checklists, anecdotal records, and cumulative cards. Kanchan Kumari emphasized the need for flexible and playful assessment techniques, tailored to the individual needs of students.
The two-day program concluded with a vote of thanks by EEDP Coordinator Sutapa Ghosh, who praised the expertise, patience, and dedication of all participants, marking the successful completion of the Capacity Building Programme.
