Jamshedpur: In a landmark achievement for Jharkhand’s tourism sector, Dalma Wildlife Sanctuary has crossed the ₹1 crore revenue mark for the first time in its history. This milestone signals Dalma’s successful transformation from a local elephant habitat into a premier national eco-tourism destination.
According to officials from the Tourism and Forest Departments, the sanctuary recorded an unprecedented footfall of over 44,500 visitors during the last financial year. Total revenue reached approximately ₹96.53 lakh, representing a sharp increase compared to the 25,290 visitors recorded a decade ago in 2014–15.
Surge Driven by Modern Infrastructure
The dramatic rise in tourist interest stems from a focused development of state-of-the-art facilities. Dalma now offers a seamless blend of raw wilderness and modern comfort, including:
-
Jharkhand’s First Canopy Walk: A 200-metre-long elevated pathway suspended 25 feet high, offering a unique treetop view of the forest.
-
Eco-Friendly Accommodations: High-demand tree houses and bamboo huts nestled deep within the woods provide a tranquil retreat for nature enthusiasts.
-
The Pindrabera Experience: The journey to the Pindrabera hilltop, situated at an altitude of 3,000 feet, has become a major draw for adventure seekers and photographers.
A Blend of Culture, Education, and Spirituality
Beyond adventure, the sanctuary offers a holistic experience through its Tribal Museum and 3D Nature Informatics Centre at Makulakocha. These facilities educate visitors on the region’s rich tribal heritage and biodiversity.
Additionally, religious sites like the Dalma Mai Cave, Shiva Temple, and Hanuman Temple maintain a steady stream of devotees throughout the year. The hilltop watchtower, offering panoramic views of the Jamshedpur skyline, remains a favorite vantage point, especially during the monsoon when the lush valleys resemble the hill stations of northern India.
A Model for Sustainable Tourism
“With rising footfall and revenue, Dalma is emerging as a model for sustainable eco-tourism in India,” stated a senior official. “Continued investment in infrastructure and conservation will further strengthen its position as a premier destination.”
