Jamshedpur: In a major initiative aimed at promoting eco-tourism and generating self-employment opportunities for villagers, the Forest Department has started preparations to develop “Tourism Villages” inside the Dalma Wildlife Sanctuary region.
Under the proposed plan, tourists visiting Dalma will soon be able to stay in specially developed home stays within forest villages, offering them an opportunity to experience rural life amid dense forests, hills and natural surroundings.
Officials said the initiative is designed to create a balance between tourism, environmental conservation and local economic development.
Home Stay Facilities to Promote Rural Tourism
The Forest Department plans to establish well-equipped home stay facilities in selected villages across the Dalma region. Tourists will be able to stay with local families and enjoy a peaceful atmosphere far away from the noise and stress of urban life.
The project is expected to provide visitors with an authentic rural experience, including interaction with villagers, traditional lifestyles and scenic natural surroundings.
Tourists will also get the chance to taste local cuisine prepared on traditional wood-fired stoves and witness the cultural heritage of the region from close quarters.
Survey to Begin Soon for Village Selection
Dalma Divisional Forest Officer Saba Alam Ansari said a detailed survey will soon be conducted to identify suitable villages for the ambitious project.
According to officials, villages with a favourable environment and basic infrastructure facilities will be selected under the scheme. Residents of these villages will receive training and support from the Forest Department to operate and manage the home stay facilities efficiently.
Construction and development work is expected to begin after the completion of the survey process.
Focus on Eco-Tourism Without Environmental Damage
Forest officials stated that the main objective of the initiative is to promote eco-tourism without harming the natural ecosystem of the Dalma forests.
The department aims to create a direct connection between tourists, nature and local culture while ensuring that tourism activities remain environmentally sustainable.
Authorities believe the project will encourage responsible tourism and help visitors understand the ecological importance of the Dalma region.
Villagers to Get New Employment Opportunities
The initiative is expected to generate sustainable income opportunities for villagers living inside and around the sanctuary area.
By hosting tourists in their homes, local residents will be able to earn additional income without leaving their villages. Apart from accommodation services, villagers may also benefit through the sale of traditional food items, handicrafts and cultural performances.
Officials said the project would help strengthen rural livelihoods while preserving local traditions and cultural identity.
Unique Experience for Nature Lovers
For tourists, the proposed home stay model promises a completely different travel experience compared to conventional sightseeing tours.
Visitors will not only explore forests and hills but also experience traditional village life, local customs, folk culture and natural tranquillity. Authorities expect the initiative to attract nature enthusiasts, adventure seekers and eco-tourists from across the country.
The move is also expected to increase the duration of tourist stays in the Dalma region, shifting tourism beyond short forest visits to extended rural experiences.
Why Dalma Wildlife Sanctuary is Special
Located near Jamshedpur, the Dalma Wildlife Sanctuary is widely known for its rich biodiversity and scenic landscape.
The sanctuary serves as a major corridor for Asian elephants and is home to a variety of wildlife species, medicinal plants and dense forest vegetation.
Dalma is also popular among trekking and adventure enthusiasts due to its nature trails, hill routes and panoramic views.
Officials believe the upcoming home stay project will further establish Dalma as a major eco-tourism destination in eastern India.
